What If I Can't Keep Up? Why You Don't Have To in Small Group Strength Training
Worried you'll hold the group back? At TNT Fitness in Menasha, every workout meets you where you are. Here's how small group strength training really works.
Have you ever wondered this?
"What if I can't keep up?"
Maybe it's even stopped you from reaching out to TNT, or joining a gym at all.
You picture walking into a workout where everyone else knows what they're doing. They're stronger. They're moving faster. And you're worried you'll be the person holding everyone up.
Here's what I want you to know.
You Don't Have to Keep Up With Anyone
At TNT, training together doesn't mean everyone lifts the same weight, moves at the same pace, or does the exact same version of an exercise.
The workout meets you where you are.
That's the whole idea behind small group strength training. You get the energy and support of a group, and a coach who's paying attention to you as an individual.
Three Ways the Workout Meets You Where You Are
Here's what that looks like in real life:
- A lighter weight while you build strength. Nobody's checking what you picked up. Your weight is your weight.
- A different version of the exercise. If something doesn't feel right for your body, we change it to something that does.
- More rest when you need it. Taking a breather isn't falling behind. It's part of the plan.
Your coach's job is to help you find the right starting point. That's it. And it's a job we take seriously.
We Start Low Impact and Low Intensity. Every Time.
This is true whether you've been in a gym for 40 years or never set foot in one.
Everyone starts low impact and low intensity. We'd rather build your confidence first than have you sore, scared, and gone by week two. A lot of places hand you an exercise and hope for the best. We want to close the gap between "here's the exercise" and "here's the injury."
So we look at how you move. Then we work from a full pool of exercises, making each one easier or harder depending on what your body is telling us. We also use tools and small adjustments that help you feel the right muscles working.
Taught to Squat vs. Told to Squat
Here's a good example. A lot of people tell us they can't squat because of their knees.
Usually it's not the knees at all. It's tight hips, tight ankles, or tight feet. So we might put a small wedge under your heels. That takes the pressure off your ankles, knees, and hips. Suddenly you can squat, and you feel it in your legs where you're supposed to feel it, not in your joints.
Has anyone ever taught you how to squat? Or were you just told to?
There's a big difference. Once someone shows you how to stack your shoulders, hips, and ribs and pull your hips straight down, it clicks. People often say they've never been able to do that before. They just never got taught.
Your Only Job Is to Show Up
You don't need to walk in knowing which weight to grab, what exercise comes next, or how you'll pace yourself next to everyone else. We take that guesswork out of the workout.
Your job is to show up. Do what you can today. Then build from there.
One of our members heard about TNT for years and kept saying it couldn't help her. Then the pain got bad enough that she finally came in. She'd had her knees and hips repaired. She started slow, one day at a time. Today she's traveled the world and gets down on the floor with her grandkids. What she says now is, "I wish I started sooner."
Little by little, you get stronger. You move better. You gain confidence.
So if "What if I can't keep up?" has been holding you back, tell us what worries you most. Reach out to us here in Menasha and we'll help you figure out where to start.
